117,000 Jobs added in July 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Better. The job market beat expectations, and the stock market managed a modest gain - not great, but good enough after a turbulent week. The nation added 117,000 jobs in July, the government said Friday - far from what happens in a healthy economy, and only good for a reduction of one notch in the unemployment rate, to 9.1 percent. But the jobs number beat the forecast of economists, who were expecting no more than 90,000. And it was an overwhelming relief for investors, who just lived through two of the most brutal weeks in Wall Street history.

"Nothing to pop Champagne corks over," said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial, "but a much-needed shot in the arm for confidence at a time when we have so little."

But when they come back on Monday, investors will have to absorb another body blow:

Late Friday, ratings agency Standard & Poor's downgraded the United States' debt for the first time, saying the government's debt-reduction plans fall short. The downgrade could lead to higher interest rates and further hamper the economic recovery.

The Dow Jones industrial average finished Friday with a gain of 60.93 points and closed at 11,444.61. It made up only a small fraction of the losses from Thursday, when the Dow dropped 512, its worst since the financial crisis of 2008. Friday was not exactly quiet for the market, either.

At the start of trading, investors were thrilled with the unemployment report, and the Dow rose 171. Ten minutes later, the gains were gone. Investors focused on Europe, which is struggling to keep Italy and Spain from being consumed by a growing financial crisis, and the Dow fell 243. "The fear was that they had no plan to deal with the situation," said Randy Warren, chief investment officer at Warren Financial Service. Later in the day, Italy promised to work toward a constitutional amendment to balance its budget. It was trying to calm investors around the world, who are worried that financial problems are spreading in Europe.

The Dow's gain was only its second in the past 11 trading sessions. The average has lost about 10 percent of its value in that time. The Standard & Poor's 500, a broader measure of the market, finished just under 1,200, down a fraction of a point. It was the Dow's worst week since March 2009, down 5.8 percent. The S&P, down 7.2 percent, and the Nasdaq composite index, down 8.1 percent, had their worst weeks since November of that year.

The gain of 117,000 jobs for the U.S. economy looked even better considering that 37,000 public jobs disappeared during the month. Most of those were from a temporary government shutdown in Minnesota. Subtracting those government layoffs, the private sector added 154,000 jobs for the month. And the economy added 56,000 more jobs than first thought in May and June. Manufacturing companies added 24,000 jobs, which suggests that the supply disruptions caused by the Japan earthquake may be almost over. Makers of cars and other products found themselves short of parts after the disaster.

The July job gains ranged broadly across industries. Retailers, factories and health care firms were among the many sectors that added workers.

Workers were paid more, too. Average hourly wages showed the biggest monthly gain since 2008. More jobs and better pay means people have more cash to spend, helping the economy grow. All told, the figures suggested a slower-growing economy - but not one on the verge of a new recession, as some had feared.

Some economists were impressed that the economy managed to add more than 100,000 jobs in a month when companies feared the government might default on its debt. Congress and the White House struck a deal with hours to spare. Other economists noted that corporations remain highly profitable, stocked with cash, and can hire when needed. They're waiting for customer demand to come back in force.

The economy is still too weak to produce the 250,000 new jobs a month that it takes to bring down the unemployment rate quickly. The rate has been above 9 percent in every month except two since the Great Recession ended in June 2009. Other recent data show the economy struggling. In June, consumers cut back on spending for the first time in 20 months. Manufacturers are barely increasing their output. The economy barely grew in the first half of the year. The weakness has raised pressure on the Federal Reserve to take further steps to support growth. After they meet Tuesday, Fed policymakers could make clear that short-term interest rates will stay low indefinitely. But analysts say the Fed probably won't signal any new action.

President Barack Obama used the jobs report to press Congress to extend a Social Security tax cut enacted this year that put an extra $1,000 to $2,000 in most workers' pockets. Obama also called for a renewal of emergency unemployment benefits, which provide up to 99 weeks of support. The tax cuts and extra benefits are scheduled to expire at year's end. Economists have cautioned that the end of the two programs could weaken growth in 2012.

Economists aren't expecting much improvement this year. Tom Porcelli, chief U.S. economist at RBC Capital Markets, foresees growth at a modest 2.4 percent annual rate in the last six months - the same as he did before Friday's jobs report. "These numbers are not great," Ian Shepherdson, an economist at High Frequency Economics, said in a note to clients. "But they are a long way from recession territory."

Dan Schneider, founder of SIB Consulting and Development in Charleston, S.C., started hiring one or two employees a month earlier this year. He plans to keep doing so for the next year to year and a half. Business clients pay Schneider's firm to look over their bills and find savings. The company keeps a cut. Schneider started the company during the recession and now employs about 25 people. "The economy is not that great, and people are looking to save money," he said. "We find people more receptive to what we do."

Unemployment came down partly because some people stopped looking for work. Those people are no longer counted as unemployed. There are about 13.9 million people unemployed in the United States, double the total before the recession. The number of people working part time who would prefer full-time work declined. Adding them to people who are unemployed or have given up looking, 25.1 million people are "underemployed," about 16 percent of the work force.

Merck to slash 13,000 more jobs by 2015!

Merck plans to slash up to 13,000 more jobs by 2015, the latest large pharmaceutical corporation seeking to offset slowing sales by cutting costs. Merck expects to continue hiring in growth areas of its business, including emerging markets. The company also will stick with expansion plans at its massive Durham operations, which packages and eventually will grow vaccines to protect against chicken pox and other diseases.

Officials expect to hire more than 150 people at that campus this year, adding to the 450 jobs created during the past few years.

Merck also continues to expand a packaging facility in Wilson that employs about 350 people. Company spokesman David Caouette told media sources that 35 percent to 40 percent of the new job cuts will be in the U.S., but that he couldn't provide specifics.

The cost-cutting news follows a similar strategy at other big drug makers, including Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline. Faced with increasing generic competition and lower reimbursements from government health programs, the companies are reducing expenses, pushing harder to find promising new drugs and fine-tuning their business to appease investors.

THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION -- JUNE 2011

Nonfarm payroll employment was essentially unchanged in June (+18,000), and the
unemployment rate was little changed at 9.2 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics reported today. Employment in most major private-sector industries
changed little over the month. Government employment continued to trend down.

Household Survey Data

The number of unemployed persons (14.1 million) and the unemployment rate (9.2
percent) were essentially unchanged over the month. Since March, the number of
unemployed persons has increased by 545,000, and the unemployment rate has
risen by 0.4 percentage point. The labor force, at 153.4 million, changed
little over the month. (See table A-1.)

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (9.1 percent),
adult women (8.0 percent), teenagers (24.5 percent), whites (8.1 percent), blacks
(16.2 percent), and Hispanics (11.6 percent) showed little or no change in June.
The jobless rate for Asians was 6.8 percent, not seasonally adjusted. (See tables
A-1, A-2, and A-3.)

The number of persons unemployed for less than 5 weeks increased by 412,000 in
June. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over)
was essentially unchanged over the month, at 6.3 million, and accounted for 44.4
percent of the unemployed. (See table A-12.)

The civilian labor force participation rate was little changed in June at 64.1
percent. The employment-population ratio decreased by 0.2 percentage point to 58.2
percent. (See table A-1.)

The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (sometimes referred
to as involuntary part-time workers) was essentially unchanged in June at 8.6
million. These individuals were working part time because their hours had been
cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time job. (See table A-8.)

In June, 2.7 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force, about
the same as a year earlier. (These data are not seasonally adjusted.) These
individuals were not in the labor force, wanted and were available for work, and
had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. They were not counted as
unemployed because they had not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the
survey. (See table A-16.)

Among the marginally attached, there were 982,000 discouraged workers in June,
down by 225,000 from a year earlier. (These data are not seasonally adjusted.)
Discouraged workers are persons not currently looking for work because they
believe no jobs are available for them. The remaining 1.7 million persons
marginally attached to the labor force in June had not searched for work in the
4 weeks preceding the survey for reasons such as school attendance or family
responsibilities. (See table A-16.)

Establishment Survey Data

Total nonfarm payroll employment was essentially unchanged in June (+18,000).
Following gains averaging 215,000 per month from February through April,
employment has been essentially flat for the past 2 months. Employment in most
major private-sector industries changed little in June, while government
employment continued to trend down. (See table B-1.)

Within professional and business services, employment in professional and
technical services increased in June (+24,000). This industry has added 245,000
jobs since a recent low in March 2010. Employment in temporary help services
changed little over the month and has shown little movement on net so far this
year.

Health care employment continued to trend up in June (+14,000), with the largest
gain in ambulatory health care services. Over the prior 12 months, health care had
added an average of 24,000 jobs per month.

In June, employment in mining rose by 8,000, with most of the gain occurring in
support activities for mining. Employment in mining has increased by 128,000 since
a recent low in October 2009.

Employment in leisure and hospitality edged up (+34,000) in June and has grown by
279,000 since a recent low in January 2010.

Employment in government continued to trend down over the month (-39,000). Federal
employment declined by 14,000 in June. Employment in both state government and local
government continued to trend down over the month and has been falling since the
second half of 2008.

Manufacturing employment changed little in June. Following gains totaling 164,000
between November 2010 and April 2011, employment in this industry has been flat for
the past 2 months. In June, job gains in fabricated metal products (+8,000) were
partially offset by a loss in wood products (-5,000).

Construction employment was essentially unchanged in June. After having fallen
sharply during the 2007-09 period, employment in construction has shown little
movement on net since early 2010.

The average workweek for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls decreased by 0.1
hour to 34.3 hours in June. The manufacturing workweek for all employees decreased
by 0.3 hour to 40.3 hours over the month; factory overtime edged down by 0.1 hour
to 3.1 hours. The average workweek for production and nonsupervisory employees on
private nonfarm payrolls remained at 33.6 hours in June. (See tables B-2 and B-7.)

In June, average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls
decreased by 1 cent to $22.99. Over the past 12 months, average hourly earnings
have increased by 1.9 percent. In June, average hourly earnings of private-sector
production and nonsupervisory employees declined by 1 cent to $19.41. (See tables
B-3 and B-8.)

The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for April was revised from +232,000
to +217,000, and the change for May was revised from +54,000 to +25,000.

U.S. Economy Grows Just 1.3% in Q2

United States real gross domestic product increased at an annual rate of 1.3 percent in the second quarter of 2011, (that is, from the first quarter to the second quarter), according to the "advance" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. First-quarter growth was revised down sharply to a 0.4% rate from the earlier estimate of a 1.9% gain.

The increase in real GDP in the second quarter primarily reflected positive contributions from exports, nonresidential fixed investment, private inventory investment, and federal government spending that were partly offset by a negative contribution from state and local government spending. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, increased.

The acceleration in real GDP in the second quarter primarily reflected a deceleration in imports, an upturn in federal government spending, and an acceleration in nonresidential fixed investment that were partly offset by a sharp deceleration in personal consumption expenditures.

Real personal consumption expenditures increased 0.1 percent in the second quarter, compared with an increase of 2.1 percent in the first. Durable goods decreased 4.4 percent, in contrast to an increase of 11.7 percent. Nondurable goods increased 0.1 percent, compared with an increase of 1.6 percent. Services increased 0.8 percent, the same increase as in the first.

Real nonresidential fixed investment increased 6.3 percent in the second quarter, compared with an increase of 2.1 percent in the first. Nonresidential structures increased 8.1 percent, in contrast to a decrease of 14.3 percent. Equipment and software increased 5.7 percent, compared with an increase of 8.7 percent. Real residential fixed investment increased 3.8 percent, in contrast to a decrease of 2.4 percent.

Real exports of goods and services increased 6.0 percent in the second quarter, compared with an increase of 7.9 percent in the first. Real imports of goods and services increased 1.3 percent, compared with an increase of 8.3 percent.

Real federal government consumption expenditures and gross investment increased 2.2 percent in the second quarter, in contrast to a decrease of 9.4 percent in the first. National defense increased 7.3 percent, in contrast to a decrease of 12.6 percent. Nondefense decreased 7.3 percent, compared with a decrease of 2.7 percent. Real state and local government consumption expenditures and gross investment decreased 3.4 percent, the same decrease as in the first.

The change in real private inventories added 0.18 percentage point to the second-quarter change in real GDP after adding 0.32 percentage point to the first-quarter change. Private businesses increased inventories $49.6 billion in the second quarter, following increases of $49.1 billion in the first quarter.

United States — The outlook for the job market has improved, according to a survey of leading economists released Monday, even as the economic recovery hit a speed bump in the second quarter. In its second-quarter industry survey, the National Association for Business Economics said employers grew payrolls for a second consecutive quarter this year. The percentage of firms increasing staff levels grew to 31% in the quarter, versus only 6% in the same period a year ago. At the same time, the percentage of employers cutting jobs continued to move lower. Looking ahead, the survey showed that 39% of companies expect to add employees over the next six months, the highest level of planned hiring since January 2008. "The labor market continued to improve, with increases in current hiring and a rise in the percentage of firms planning to add workers over the next six months," William Strauss, an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, said in a statement. The jobs outlook is encouraging news for American workers. The U.S. unemployment rate stands at 9.5% as of June. The jobless rate has averaged 9.7% over the first half of the year, and many economists expect it to remain elevated into 2011.

What is Twitter (Tweeting)?

Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service, owned and operated by Twitter Inc., that enables its users to send and read other user messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page. Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other author tweets—this is known as following and subscribers are known as followers. As of late 2009, users can follow lists of authors instead of following individual authors. All users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, compatible external applications (such as, for smartphones), or by Short Message Service (SMS) available in certain countries. Since its creation in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter has gained notability and popularity worldwide and currently has more than 100 million users worldwide.

By March 2010, Twitter recorded a 1,500% increase in the number of registered users and its staff had grown fivefold. Over 70,000 registered applications have been created for Twitter, according to the company. Twitter had 400,000 tweets posted per quarter in 2007. This grew to 100 million tweets posted per quarter in 2008. By the end of 2009, 2 billion tweets per quarter were being posted. In the first quarter of 2010, 4 billion tweets have been posted. Currently, about 65 million tweets are posted each day, equalling about 750 tweets sent each second, according to Twitter.

Many job openings exist only in the minds of directors, vice presidents, and other company bigwigs, long before the job is finally advertised in newspapers or on the Internet.

Twitter is ranked as one of the 50 most visited websites worldwide by Alexa's web traffic analysis. Daily user estimates vary because the company does not release the number of active accounts. Twitter is mainly used by older adults who might not have used other social sites before Twitter, says Jeremiah Owyang, an industry analyst studying social media. "Adults are just catching up to what teens have been doing for years," he said. According to comScore only 11% of Twitter's users are aged 12 to 17. According to a study by Sysomos in June 2009, women make up a slightly larger Twitter demographic than men — 53% over 47%. It also stated that New York has the most Twitter users.

Pretty cool, huh? They also have a service called TweetMyResume where you can tweet your resume to 90,000+ followers. Sure, not everyone’s going to be ON twitter at that moment but the key is that it’s search able. JobShouts is yet another, that filters out the spammy “work at home” opportunities claiming you, too, can become a millionaire simply by stuffing envelopes in just minutes a day!

* "Keep it shorter, tighter, and more laser-focused," advises resume expert Louise Kursmark. "Resumes are by necessity becoming crisper and more to the point." With Twitter, texting, and a barrage of quick-hit multimedia messages, we're getting accustomed to the succinct. "Readers quickly lose interest in wordy resumes that don't get right to the point," she says. This goes for cover letters, too.

* "Show some humor or personality," says Jennifer Turner, of Talagy recruiting and staffing company. "I recently called a candidate, even though he didn't match any current positions, because his online resume title was, 'Smart and Funny Sales Guy.'"

* "Make your resume read like a news story, not an encyclopedia entry," suggests Sam Levine, of The Buttonwood Group. Pop an eye-catching headline and lead on the top and be sure to include a summary of qualifications.

* "Be results-oriented," advises Erin Riley, assistant director of career services at the Chapman University School of Law. Whenever possible, quantify your accomplishments. Example: Instead of simply writing "Drafted OSHA appeal," she says, include results: "Drafted OSHA appeal resulting in 90% reduction of employer fine for employee's serious on-the-job injury."

* "Show what sets you apart," says Nancy Keene, a director of Stanton Chase global executive search firm. "I like to see some indication of personal interests. It's a good conversation trigger and provides some additional insight into who the person is."

Riley agrees. "It's an opportunity to make yourself memorable as an applicant," she says. While an actual Personal Interest section is not usually advised, you can find ways to integrate your interests into your resume. For example, you could list your volunteer activities to give hiring managers some sense of your passions.

* "Use appropriate keywords," suggests Kursmark. Since machines are increasingly reading your resume before people are, give the tracking systems what they're looking for: the most significant keywords from the job description that fit your qualifications -- anything from degrees to programming languages and other specialized job-related skills.

* "Let others sing your praises," says Richard Deems, co-author of "Make Job Loss Work for You." "We add a section at the end we title, 'What Others Say.' Then we list five short statements, usually without attribution, that others have said about the person." Examples: "Sticks with it until the job gets done," or "The most creative, prolific employee I've ever had."

* "If your name is difficult to pronounce, include your nickname," says Heather R. Huhman, president of Come Recommended. Like it or not, "Companies are more likely to call you for an interview if you provide a name they can easily pronounce," she says.

United States — The U.S. economic recovery will remain slow deep into next year, held back by shoppers reluctant to spend and employers hesitant to hire, according to an Associated Press survey of leading economists. The latest quarterly AP Economy Survey shows economists have turned gloomier in the past three months. They foresee weaker growth and higher unemployment than they did before. As a result, the economists think the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates near zero until at least next spring. Yet despite their expectation of slower growth, a majority of the 42 economists surveyed believe the recovery remains on track, raising hopes that the economy can avoid falling back into a “double-dip” recession.

5 Job Fair Interview Tips To Remember

 Do Your Homework. Do some research on the companies that will be attending so you have an idea of what they are looking for and how you can bring value to their organization.

 Watch Your Nonverbal Communication. The way you carry yourself, use your eyes and use your body language will tell an employer a lot about your character. Remember to carry yourself with confidence and integrity.

 Don't Exaggerate Or Lie. Remember that many cases of your work history are only a phone call or a Google search away. Be prepared to back up any statements you make to recruiters at the job fair.

 Emphasize The Positive. No matter your previous work situation, or the current environment, be sure to steer your conversation into a positive light. What you CAN do, what you HAVE done and what is possible with your skill sets are a great place to start.

 Wait For An Offer To Bring Up Salary. You will want to stay away from pay on the first conversation. While this is an important factor, keep the conversations on your value and getting the job offer, or the 2nd interview. Then come in and ask about pay.

The Interview After the Tweeted Résumé

You may have heard the horror stories--job hunters who take phone calls or text during an interview, or bring out a sandwich and start chomping, or brush their hair, or worse. You wouldn't do any of those things, would you? Of course not. But there are tons of other job interview no-no's you may not have thought of. Or that you've forgotten. The job hunting trail is long and arduous, and a little refresher course can't hurt. Twitter Users Top Of The Pile For Job Interviews - 1st July 2010

Jobseekers must improve their CVs by making them more interesting, getting their point across quicker and broadening their range of vocabulary according to a new survey which revealed Twitter users write better résumés and are more likely to be shortlisted for jobs.

MyJobGroup.co.uk (www.MyJobGroup.co.uk), which boasts over 300 regional jobsites across the UK, and is the largest network of regional job boards, analysed 500 CVs from UK-based jobseekers and found repetition abound.

One-third (37%) used exactly the same opening phrase; while the three most popular first-line words are 'experience' (27.1%), 'skills' (23.2%) and, ironically, 'individual' (22.6%).

The company believes jobseekers who use Twitter are more likely to be shortlisted because they write interesting, eye-catching and succinct CV summaries which appeals to recruiters.

It is a view Professor Cary Cooper CBE, Distinguished Professor of Organisational Psychology and Health, Lancaster University Management School, agrees with. He said: "When reviewing CVs for the first time, employers may only ever see candidates' short summaries, so a jobseeker with a standard, dull or uninteresting personal synopsis is less likely to be shortlisted.

"If you have an original and interesting personal summary, you are more likely to catch the eye of the person reviewing the CVs, so you are more likely to make the shortlist and hence stand a better chance of landing the job you've applied for.

"Candidates who are innovative and novel in their use of language and identify themselves in a non-formulaic way are more likely to be people who use Twitter, or have their own blog. If you use telegraphic forms of communication already then your CV - and certainly your CV summary - is more likely to be snappy, interesting and, ultimately, attention-grabbing.

"Twitter users more readily think about, and use, clever key words and they're probably more expressive in an abridged style - the art of 'getting to the point' is not lost on people who Tweet."

Lee Fayer, Managing Director at MyJobGroup.co.uk, said: "CV writing is an art and with so many jobseekers hunting fewer roles, employment chances are improved with a well-written résumés.

"Like any first impression, those first few lines are crucial, so an interesting and memorable professional summary is key - people used to Tweeting do this better than most as they are regularly summarising longer prose into sharp, interesting copy."

Professor Cooper concluded: "The important thing is to think about how many people are actively looking for jobs at the moment - demand is significantly outstripping supply so in a highly competitive environment jobseekers need to create immediate recognition. The ones who do it best are more likely to be shortlisted and hence stand a better overall chance of landing a job."

The research also shows the average British CV uses a total of 607 words (4,255 characters) and the typical length of a professional summary is 125 characters, or 19 words, so the company has launched a Twitter competition to find the best 140-character CVs.

(United States) In November (2009), employers took 1,797 mass layoff actions involving 165,346 workers. Mass layoff events and associated initial claims both decreased over the month to their lowest levels since July 2008. The number of manufacturing events, at 481, decreased by 138 over the month, and associated initial claims, at 56,243, decreased by 14,329.

In November (2009) 36 states and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate decreases, 8 states registered increases, and 6 states had no change. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 19 states and decreased in 31 states and the District of Columbia.

From November 2008 to November 2009, 45 states experienced statistically significant changes in employment, all of which were decreases. The largest statistically significant job losses occurred in California (‑617,600), Florida (‑284,800), Texas (‑271,700), Illinois (‑250,400), Michigan (‑240,200), and New York (‑210,500).

Overview

Overall labor market conditions deteriorated markedly in 2008 following the onset of the recession in December 2007. Although individuals in all race and ethnicity groups experienced labor market difficulties, labor market problems for blacks or African Americans and Hispanics or Latinos were especially acute in 2008. For example, in 2008, the unemployment rate was 10.1 percent for blacks and 7.6 percent for Hispanics. These figures were considerably higher than the unemployment rates for whites and Asians, at 5.2 percent and 4.0 percent, respectively.

The labor market difficulties of blacks and Hispanics are associated with many factors, not all of which are measurable. Some of these factors are their lower average levels of schooling; their tendency to be employed in occupations with high levels of unemployment; their greater concentration in the central cities of urban areas, where job opportunities may be relatively limited; and the likelihood that they experience discrimination in the workplace. These and other factors may make it especially difficult for some black and Hispanic workers to find or keep jobs as the overall demand for labor contracts during economic downturns.

Your Résumé

Many of us want a fast way to create a Résumé and we often think the easy way to do this is to find a Résumé and copy it. I've found this results in very weak Résumé because you need to market your unique set of skills and achievements ... that's why a Résumé that outlines your specific skills, qualifications and experience is so important. Having a solid and effective resume can greatly improve your chances of landing that dream job. Every Résumé is a one-of-a-kind marketing communication. It should be appropriate to your situation and do exactly what you want it to do.

With employers receiving hundreds of resumes you must make sure that your resume hooks an employer's attention within a 5-second glance. Employers make snap judgments when glancing at your Résumé. If they see unrelated job titles or skills the likelihood is very high that they will make an immediate assumption that you are not qualified for the job you want. Adding to this problem is the fact that employers don't have the time to read through each of your job descriptions to determine if you have the skills they need.

The design of your Résumé must highlight the most important information about your work experience, skills and education. At first glance this information forms the image that employers have of your skills and abilities. Résumé design should get attention but it's really the content of your resume, the descriptions you include of your skills and abilities, that determine how many interviews you generate. You will generate many more interviews by tweaking your Résumé and cover letter so that they address the specific skills each employer requests.

Another strategy that is extremely important in controlling the image that employers develop about you--is to use Power Words or verbs that match the level of position you want. Learning how to analyze the key words that employers provide in help wanted ads and job descriptions are a key element in creating powerful Résumé. In addition to the skills or needs listed by the employer, the employer will have many more needs that you should identify and address in your Résumé and cover letter.

An objective on the Résumé

Most people choose to state an objective on their Résumé, instead of including it in the body of their cover letter. The objective can help convince an employer that you know what you want to do and are familiar with the field. The objective on your Résumé is optional. An objective for your Résumé is not an option. As a job applicant you need to be clear about what your employment goals are. When you include an objective on your Résumé, it's important to customize the Résumé objective to match the position you are applying for. The more specific you are, the better chance you have of being considered for the job you are interested in. A good Résumé objective is one which is a powerful, strong and concise statement that can show the potential employer that you understand the needs of their business. It must show that you can bring added value to their business. The objective should relate the position that you are applying for, and it should try and persuade the employer into reading the rest of your Résumé in a positive light.

When not to use an objective on the Résumé

Although Résumé objective statements are a great way to draw the employer's eyes to your application, it may not always be the best way do to this. Using a Résumé objective in situations such as general applications in places like careers expositions or careers websites may not be the best idea. It also is not recommended to place objectives on Résumés when you are applying for several positions in the same organization at the same time.

It is also not recommended for people who have had several years of solid work experience on them as it does not highlight their skills to be the best of their advantage. A better way of improving your chances of getting a job when you have much experience is to have a profile at the top of your Résumé. A profile can include your best areas of expertise, your principal skills, your personal qualities and an outline of your career ambition. The profile has the same key idea behind it - to get the potential employer to look at your Résumé in a more positive light - but does it in a way to more benefit your skills and experience.

When not to use an objective on the Résumé

1. A Résumé is a brief account of one's professional or work experience and qualifications, often submitted with an employment application. A summary: a Résumé of the facts of the case.

2. Your Résumé is your valuable sales pitch. A Résumé is not just a list of accomplishments. It is your high-caliber selling agent, a sales pitch that will present you to your prospective employer. You need create a Résumé that works as your specialized marketing representative, presenting you to your future employer as the best possible, the obvious, choice. Keep in mind that a person is hiring you, so in this case, the first impression really is the last. Only those Résumés that catch the employer’s attention go onto step two—the job interview. When you get to the job interview, you know that your Résumé has done its job, now it’s up to you!

3. A Résumé has one purpose – to market your skills, achievements, professional background, academic history, and future potential to a prospective employer. Much like a 30-second commercial, today’s Résumé must provide maximum data as quickly as possible, differentiate you from all other candidates, and be attractively packaged.

4. You should give them both the same tips and ideas because whether your career is in a conservative industry such as banking, finance, and education, or a nontraditional sector such as entertainment and the arts, your Résumé should do and accomplish the following:

• Quickly capture the hiring manager’s attention;
• Detail the skills and qualifications you can bring to the job;
• Dovetail your past experience with the needs of the current position;
• Showcase accomplishments; and
• Provide relevant data.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

Overview

The FLSA establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and youth employment standards affecting employees in the private sector and in Federal, State, and local governments. Covered nonexempt workers are entitled to a minimum wage of not less than $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009. Overtime pay at a rate not less than one and one-half times the regular rate of pay is required after 40 hours of work in a workweek.

FLSA Minimum Wage: The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009. Many states also have minimum wage laws. In cases where an employee is subject to both state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to the higher minimum wage.

United States — The economy's most vexing problem, unemployment, is showing the first signs of easing. The U.S. Government said the nation's unemployment rate unexpectedly fell in July for the first time in 15 months and that employers cut fewer jobs. The government said employers shed 247,000 jobs in July, the fewest in a year. Economists had expected 320,000 lost jobs. The unemployment rate dropped to 9.4 percent from 9.5 percent in June, rather than rising to 9.6 percent as forecast.

Whistleblower: A whistleblower is a person who alleges concealed misconduct on the part of an organization or body of people, usually from within that same organization. This misconduct may be classified in many ways; for example, a violation of a law, rule, regulation and/or a direct threat to public interest, such as fraud, health/safety violations, and corruption. Whistleblowers may make their allegations internally (for example, to other people within the accused organization) or externally (to law enforcement agencies, to the media or to groups concerned with the issues). Whistleblowers frequently face reprisal - sometimes at the hands of the organization or group which they have accused, sometimes from related organizations, and sometimes under law.

Peralta Community College District trustees will decide tonight whether to fire an employee it says gave the media public information that embarrassed Chancellor Elihu Harris. District administrators have recommended the board fire Jennifer Lenahan, an executive assistant to Vice Chancellor Tom Smith. The action comes after a California Newspaper published four articles July 12, 2009 noting several questionable decisions by Harris and other Peralta leaders, including a no-bid contract awarded to Mark Lindquist, Harris' longtime business partner. The district claims that Lenahan — in response to a request under the California Public Records Act — provided the newspaper a document listing all payments from Peralta to Lindquist's company, 1701 Associates.

The newspaper claims it received no such document from Lenahan or any other source. In addition, public-records experts said Lenahan would have been within her rights as a public employee if she had provided the information. Lenahan did compile a list of payments to Lindquist, but she was ordered not to give it to the newspaper, according to a document that notified Lenahan of the district's intent to fire her. She showed the record of payments to Peralta spokesman Jeff Heyman and asked whether the newspaper should receive it. "Can you believe that we paid him that much?" Lenahan, according to district documents, asked Heyman about the $940,000 no-bid contract awarded to Lindquist. "We don't create documents for" reporters, Heyman answered. "He did not ask for that. We only give him what he asks for."

California law requires public agencies to help people find specific information, often by providing a list of relevant documents, records experts said. In their notice to Lenahan, Peralta administrators called the Lindquist payments "sensitive and confidential" and said they should not have been disclosed. "Your decision to manufacture a document that would reflect negatively on the chancellor and the district is not acceptable," the district wrote.

Lenahan also was accused of several other malfeasances, including telling co-workers, "Everybody hired at this district has something to do with the chancellor." Two of the district's highest-paid administrators, general counsel Thuy Thi Nguyen and special assistant Alton Jelks, have long ties to Harris, a former Oakland mayor and state legislator.

Notable whistleblowers include:

• Jeffrey Wigand, who exposed the Big Tobacco scandal, revealing that executives of the companies knew that cigarettes were addictive and approved the addition of carcinogenic ingredients to the cigarettes. Wigand's story was the basis for the 1999 movie The Insider.

• Robert MacLean, who disclosed that the FAMS planned to remove air marshals from long haul flights in order to avoid the cost of an overnight hotel stay.

• Dr. David Graham, who discovered that the pain-reliever Vioxx increased the risk of cardiovascular problems, spoke out against the policies of the Food and Drug Administration, and succeeded in convincing the FDA to require large warning labels on Vioxx packaging.

• Rick S. Piltz, who worked with the U.S. Climate Change Science Program and blew the whistle on Philip Cooney, a White House official who edited a climate change report to reflect the administration's views without having any scientific background.

• Dr. Frederic Whitehurst, who exposed irregularities at the USA's Federal Bureau of Investigation's Crime Lab.

• Paul van Buitenen, who exposed irregularities in the European Commission.

Occupational Safety and Health Act

The Occupational Safety and Health Act is designed to regulate employment conditions relating to occupational safety and health and to achieve safer and more healthful workplaces throughout the nation. The Act provides for a wide range of substantive and procedural rights for employees and representatives of employees. The Act also recognizes that effective implementation and achievement of its goals depend in large measure upon the active and orderly participation of employees, individually and through their representatives, at every level of safety and health activity.

To help ensure that employees are, in fact, free to participate in safety and health activities, Section 11(c) of the Act prohibits any person from discharging or in any manner retaliating against any employee because the employee has exercised rights under the Act.

OSHA also administers the whistleblowing provisions of sixteen other statutes, protecting employees who report violations of various trucking, airline, nuclear power, pipeline, environmental, rail, consumer product and securities laws.

A person filing a complaint of discrimination or retaliation will be required to show that he or she engaged in protected activity, the employer knew about that activity, the employer subjected him or her to an adverse employment action, and the protected activity contributed to the adverse action. Adverse employment action is generally defined as a material change in the terms or conditions of employment. Depending upon the circumstances of the case, "discrimination" can include:

• Firing or laying off
• Blacklisting
• Demoting
• Denying overtime or promotion
• Disciplining
• Denial of benefits
• Failure to hire or rehire
• Intimidation
• Reassignment affecting prospects for promotion
• Reducing pay or hours

United States — The outlook for the job market has improved, according to a survey of leading economists released Monday, even as the economic recovery hit a speed bump in the second quarter. In its second-quarter industry survey, the National Association for Business Economics said employers grew payrolls for a second consecutive quarter this year. The percentage of firms increasing staff levels grew to 31% in the quarter, versus only 6% in the same period a year ago. At the same time, the percentage of employers cutting jobs continued to move lower. Looking ahead, the survey showed that 39% of companies expect to add employees over the next six months, the highest level of planned hiring since January 2008. "The labor market continued to improve, with increases in current hiring and a rise in the percentage of firms planning to add workers over the next six months," William Strauss, an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, said in a statement. The jobs outlook is encouraging news for American workers. The U.S. unemployment rate stands at 9.5% as of June. The jobless rate has averaged 9.7% over the first half of the year, and many economists expect it to remain elevated into 2011.

ADP National Employment
Report

According to the May 2009 update of the ADP National Employment Report, job losses last month totaled 532,000 and the estimate for April was revised upward by 54,000. Despite the declines, ADP characterized the average job losses of 539,000 over both April and May as "a notable improvement over the first three months of the year, when monthly losses averaged 691,000." ADP suggests that employment will decline at a slower rate over the next few months. Also in the report were numbers highlighting jobs losses among manufacturers. The sector shed 149,000 jobs and recorded its 39th consecutive monthly decline. Small businesses also felt pain. Firms with fewer than 50 employees reportedly lost another 209,000 jobs bringing overall job loss since January 2008 to 2.1 million. Medium-sized firms fared equally poorly last month. Companies with between 50 and 499 workers saw employment decline by 223,000 in May.

You are currently in the “job hunting” business. To stand head and shoulders above the rest of the job-seeking crowd, it’s important to lay out an effective strategy. By defining what you want and need, you’re on your way to getting it.

Jump-start your next job search with these helpful job-hunting strategies:

 Know thyself. Begin your job search by taking a thorough inventory of your interests, skills, accomplishments, experience, goals, and values. Make a detailed list. The key to a successful job search is to recognize what makes you a unique candidate and to communicate this effectively to a prospective employer, both verbally and in writing.

 Aim for the right target. Try to match your skills, interests, and values with the right career choice. If one of your goals is to get a larger salary, don’t focus on career paths that traditionally pay low salaries. Conduct research on various fields and local companies within those fields. Learn about different businesses that interest you and target those that are more likely to have open positions.

 Be assertive and proactive. Don’t wait around for opportunity to come knocking on your door. While cold calling potential employers can be intimidating, it remains a powerful strategy. It’s important to get through the door before your competition.

 Do some sleuthing. One key to breaking in is understanding the “hidden” job market. Many job openings exist only in the minds of directors, vice presidents, and other company bigwigs, long before the job is finally advertised in newspapers or on the Internet. If you can present yourself as the perfect candidate at this early stage, an employer may snap you up without looking elsewhere.

 Work the network. Networking should be at the center of your job search strategy. Get the word out to friends, trusted colleagues, and even relatives that you are actively looking for a job, and ask them to keep their eyes and ears open for any opportunities. Expand your network and join professional organizations, sign up for job search newsletters and e-mail blasts, contact former professors and classmates, and participate in Internet discussion boards.

 Get professional help. Employment agencies come in all shapes, sizes, and price ranges; they can be an excellent resource for job leads. Some specialize in very specific occupational areas, and many often have exclusive arrangements with large companies. If you’re interested in the services of an agency, investigate it carefully. Determine what the agency will do for you and how much it will cost.

 Be temporarily flexible. Temp jobs are a great way to learn skills, gain experience, and earn money while looking for a permanent position. They are also a way to prove your worth and be first in line when a full-time position opens up. Working as a consultant or independent contractor in a company can also eventually lead to steady, full-time employment.

 Say it clearly. When sending out résumés, catch the prospective employer’s attention with a brief and concise cover letter that clearly spells out how your qualifications match the job requirements. Connect the dots for the reader, and make it obvious why you’re the perfect candidate for the job.

 Keep careful records. Keeping track of the progress of your job search is important. Maintain a detailed record of all the jobs you have applied to, including communications, interviews, referrals, and follow-up actions. This will help you build a network of valuable contacts both for your current job search and for any future ones.

 Be persistent. Job searching is hard work and there are times when you will be discouraged. Just keep in mind that everyone has been through the same grind at one point. Imminent Danger

Your Rights under federal law as an employee in the United States!

Definition.

29 USC 662 Section 13(a) of the Act defines imminent danger as ".....any conditions or practices in any place of employment which are such that a danger exists which could reasonably be expected to cause death or serious physical harm immediately or before the imminence of such danger can be eliminated through the enforcement procedures otherwise provided by this Act."

Requirements. The following conditions must be met before a hazard becomes an imminent danger:

 There must be a threat of death or serious physical harm. "Serious physical harm" means that a part of the body is damaged so severely that it cannot be used or cannot be used very well.

 For a health hazard there must be a reasonable expectation that toxic substances or other health hazards are present and exposure to them will shorten life or cause substantial reduction in physical or mental efficiency. The harm caused by the health hazard does not have to happen immediately.

 The threat must be immediate or imminent. This means that you must believe that death or serious physical harm could occur within a short time, for example before OSHA could investigate the problem.

 If an OSHA inspector believes that an imminent danger exists, the inspector must inform affected employees and the employer that he is recommending that OSHA take steps to stop the imminent danger.

 OSHA has the right to ask a federal court to order the employer to eliminate the imminent danger.

How to Get a Job With a Criminal Record

Whether you’ve just been released from a lengthy incarceration or you had a minor scrape with the law when you were a kid, a criminal record can be an added source of anxiety in an already stressful job search. Depending on the severity of your offense(s), your criminal record may not affect your employment prospects at all, or it may make finding a job nearly impossible. Still, you have reason to be hopeful. While you may face some hurdles, you will eventually be able to find employment, regardless of your record.

Steps

1. Prepare while you are in prison. While serving time take advantage of opportunities to get your G.E.D., start or complete your college education, or get vocational training. Good preparation is especially important if you have been away from the outside world for an extended time, if you have limited job skills and experience, or if you will not be able to return to your previous area of employment (for example, if you were a bank teller and were convicted of theft, you probably will no longer be able to work in banking).

2. Take advantage of education or job training programs that may be available to you. Government agencies and non-profit organizations provide a host of opportunities for all job seekers to get more training or education. The experience and skills you develop in these programs can make a big difference in the success of your job search. There are also such programs targeted specifically to people who have recently been released from prison. These programs usually also help you find a job during the program and after completion.

3. Eliminate jobs for which your record will automatically disqualify you. Your record may automatically disqualify you for some positions, especially government jobs requiring security clearances, military jobs, positions with fiduciary responsibility (e.g., insurance or banking), and jobs working with children. If you avoid wasting time on jobs you cannot possibly get, you’ll be able to focus on real opportunities and you’ll be less likely to get discouraged. Most importantly, though, do your research. Don’t just assume that your record will disqualify you from a certain job. You may be pleasantly surprised.

4. Be realistic. Honestly evaluating your qualifications is important for all job seekers. You need to find something that fits you and your skill level, and if you consistently apply for jobs for which you don’t have the right skills, you’ll quickly become discouraged. If you have a criminal record, you’ll need to consider how that affects your opportunities, too.

5. Start small and work your way up. Understand that when a person sees your record, he or she may be reluctant to hire you for a position with a lot of responsibility. That same person, however, may be more than willing to give you a chance in another (usually lower-paid) position. In addition, it’s important to understand that the biggest obstacle may be the gap in your employment history, not simply your conviction. If you want to return to your previous career, it’s likely that business processes and tools may have changed substantially since you left your last position, so you’ll probably need to take a step down to gain more training. Get your foot in the door, especially with a company or in a field that can lead to better opportunities in the future.

6. Learn about the employment laws in your state and/or country. In some countries (including the U.S.), employers generally cannot automatically disqualify you based solely on an arrest or even a conviction (if the nature of the crime is relevant to the job, however, they may lawfully base an adverse hiring decision on this). This is why applications that ask if you’ve been arrested or convicted of a crime usually have a disclaimer stating that a “yes” answer may not necessarily prevent you from being hired. Know your rights, and consult an attorney or make an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaint if an employer unlawfully discriminates against you.

7. Be honest about your history. It can be tempting to lie when an application asks if you’ve been arrested or convicted of a crime. Avoid the temptation: not only is this dishonest, chances are the lie will be discovered. Most employers now conduct some sort of background check, and if they find that you have been dishonest on the application you will almost certainly not be hired. If you’ve already been hired and the lie is discovered later, you can be fired for it. In addition, lying on some applications (such as for military enlistment) is a criminal offense.

8. Know what to answer on applications. Some states and countries now prohibit employers from asking about certain offenses, offenses that are over a certain number of years old, or arrests that did not result in a conviction. Your research on employment laws should help you know what questions you have to answer. In addition, be sure to answer only the specific question that is asked. For example, if the application asks if you’ve been convicted of a crime, you don’t need to put down an arrest that did not result in a conviction. If a conviction has been sealed or expunged from your record, or if you pled guilty to an offense and completed a pre-trial diversion program (i.e. deferred adjudication) that resulted in no conviction, you may not need to report these either. Be aware, however, that when enlisting in the military or certain federal government positions, you must report all offenses, even those that have been expunged or sealed.

9. Explain your answer if asked about convictions or arrests. Job applications and interviewers will give you an opportunity to explain the circumstances behind the offense or alleged offense. Be sure to take this opportunity if giving more information about the offense may be helpful.

10. Try to get an offense sealed or expunged from your record. Ask your attorney, public defender, or parole / probation officer if you may be able to get the offense removed from your record so that you can legally and ethically answer “no” to conviction questions.

11. Employ yourself. If you’re willing to work extra hard and you have marketable skills or abilities you may be able to make your own opportunities. You could start a yard maintenance business or provide contract IT services to companies, for example—you’re limited only by your imagination. Think about what you’re good at and what you like doing, and go for it. You’ll probably need to have another job while you’re getting your business on its feet, but if your record has you stuck in dead-end jobs, you might as well take a chance.

12. Consider joining the military. Some people think that the military will take just about anyone, while some think that you can’t get in at all with a criminal record. In the U.S., they’re both wrong. The military is selective, but depending on the type and number of offenses and the length of time since an offense, you may be able to get a waiver that will allow you to enlist. If you don’t live in the U.S., your country’s military may have more or less stringent policies. Before you enlist, consider the potential dangers of joining the military, but also consider the benefits. The military can provide job training and instill discipline if you have trouble motivating yourself.

Tips

13. Do not get discouraged. You will find work eventually. And remember, when hunting for a job, batting average isn't important. All you have to do is to find one decent job. If you get that job on the 51st try, the 50 previous rejections don't mean squat. Remember, also, that the person who won’t consider anything beyond your record probably isn't a person you'd want to work for, anyway.

14. One tactic that works surprisingly well--try to delay disclosing your offense until as far down the interviewing process as possible. For example, if you have a serious offense on your record, write "ask" or "will discuss in interview" on the job application. This way you won't get automatically screened out. The more people have an opportunity to get to know you, the greater your chances that they will like you and will consider hiring you as a person rather than on some preconceived notion.

15. Especially if you’ve been incarcerated, there is nothing more important than a positive attitude. If you focus on your resentment of the system and feel upset or cheated by the system, it will in fact serve to “keep you down.” If, however, you focus on the future and decide that you really want to succeed in the outside world, you will find that you have a lot of opportunity to get free or reduced-cost education, training, and career services to help you on your way.

16. Your parole officer (P.O.) may be a great person, or he or she may be a jerk. Either way, the more pleasant and cooperative you are with your P.O., the easier things will be for you. Remember that your P.O. can be a great resource in your job hunt, and even if he or she isn’t as helpful as you’d like, it’s still a whole lot easier to deal with the P.O. a few times a month than to deal with correctional officers 24 - 7.

17. Build your resume and get good professional references. Work hard and conscientiously in just about any position, and you can build experience and references that will make your criminal record less important to future employers. If you have to take an undesirable job, try to keep it in perspective. Do well in whatever job you have, and get education and training to help you move on.

18. Sign up for some spiritual training or Bible study courses. Officials look kindly on this type of endeavor. When courses are completed successfully you could receive help with parole and re-entry into society. One such course is offered by Crossroad Bible Institute free of charge.

Warnings

19. Do not resort to illegal activities, no matter how dire your circumstances are. Work hard and take whatever job is available if you have to, but don’t risk getting sent back to prison.

20. If you have recently been released from prison, your job hunt may be particularly difficult, but you cannot afford to get discouraged. One of your conditions of parole will likely be that you find a job. What’s more, studies show that people who find full-time employment in the year after release from prison are far more likely to stay out of prison than those who remain unemployed.

21. One of the saddest things in the world is seeing a guy come back to prison on a TPV (Technical Parole Violation). The fact is that there are a lot of things that other people can do without raising an eyebrow that will get you sent back. It's not fair, but it's reality. So, don't cut corners, ever. Don't even get close to violating your terms of parole or probation. You can get back to living like a normal human being when you get off paper.

22. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous employers try to take advantage of people with a criminal record (particularly those on parole or probation). They know that you are likely to need a job more than most people, and that you may need to fulfill legal requirements. If an employer unfairly threatens to fire you or report you to your parole officer in order to get you to work for less money or to perform sexual favors, for example, you should report the behavior to your case supervisor.

23. Lying to a military recruiter about your criminal history is a felony—don’t do it.

It's very hard to write your own resume because a resume is a macro view of your life, but you live your life at the micro level, obsessing about daily details that have no bearing on your resume. For that reason, a lot of people hire someone to help them. After all, spending money on a resume writer is one of the few expenditures that will have good return right away. But if you're writing your resume on your own, the first thing you'll have to do is make some mental shifts. You need to rethink the goals of a resume, and rethink the rules of a resume in order to approach the project like the best of the resume professionals. That means not making the most common resume mistakes, and not breaking a few key rules.

Steps

Don't focus on your responsibilities, focus on what you achieved. A resume is not your life story. No one cares. If your life story were so interesting, you'd have a book deal. The only things that should be on your resume are achievements. Anyone can do their job, but only a small percentage of the population can do their job well, wherever they go.
- The best way to show that you did your job well is from achievements. The best achievement is a promotion because it's an objective way to show that you impressed the people you work for. The next best way to show objective measures is to present quantified achievements. Most people do not think in terms of quantified achievements when they are in the job, but on the resume, that's the only part of the job that matters. No one can see that you were a "good team player" on your resume unless you can say "established a team to solve problem x and increased sales x%" or "joined under-performing team and helped that team beat production delivery dates by three weeks."
- Steer clear of expressions like "Duties included," "Responsibilities included," or "Responsible for." That's job-description language, and not what employers are looking for.[1] Use action verbs instead, but minimize the use of "I" and articles (the, an, a).[2]Write a self evaluation and for each achievement, ask yourself: "What does this accomplishment say about me, and what I can do for this employer I want to work for?"
Don't make your resume a moral statement; it's a marketing document. The best marketing documents show the product in the very best light, which means using whatever most outrageous tactics possible to make you look good. As long as you are not lying, you will be fine. Here's an example: You join a software company that just launched a product and the product had so many problems that they had to hire someone to handle the calls. You start doing the tech support, and you work tons of overtime because the calls are so backed up. You clean up the phone queue and then you start taking long lunches because there's not a lot to do, and then you start job hunting because the job is boring.Here's how you summarize this job on your resume: Assumed management responsibility for tech support and decreased call volume 20%. How do you know 20%? Who knows? It was probably more. But you can't quantify exactly, so err on the safe side. But if you just say "Did tech support for a software company" no one knows you did a good job.
Keep it all on one page. The idea of a resume is to get someone to call you. Talk with you on the phone. Offer you an interview. So a resume is like a first date. You only show your best stuff and you don't show it all. Some people dump everything they can think of onto their resume, but a resume is not the only chance you'll have to sell yourself. In fact, the interview is where the hard-core selling takes place. So you only put your very best achievements on the resume. Sure, there will be other questions people will want answers to, but that will make them call you. And that's good, right?
- For those of you who can't bear to take off the twenty extra lines on your resume because you think the interviewer has to see every single thing about you right away, consider that a hiring manager has to sift through a pile of resumes to figure out which person to interview; each resume gets about a ten-second look. If you think you need a longer resume, give someone one page of your resume and have them look at it for ten seconds. Ask them what they remember; it won't be much. They are not going to remember any more information in ten seconds if you give them two pages to look at; ten seconds is ten seconds.
- If you have a long job history behind you, beware of age discrimination. Employers might think you're too expensive if you have loads of experience. If you're at the senior level, list about 15 years of job history (no more) and don't provide the date of your college graduation if it was more than about 10 years ago.[3]
Ditch the line about references on request. It's implied. Of course, if someone wants a reference, you will give one. No one presumes that you will not. So when you write that you will provide a reference you seem to not understand how the game is played.
- Don't list references on your resume at all; if they are requested along with your resume, list them on a separate sheet.[4]
- Bonus tip: If you have an excellent reference, like a CEO of a Fortune 500 company who vacations with your Mom, have the reference call before you even go to the interview. Sets the tone for the employer to think you are amazing.
Tread lightly on the personal interests line. Your personal interests are not there to make you look interesting. They are there to get you an interview. Every line on your resume is there to get you an interview. So only list personal interests that reveal a quality that will help you meet the employer's needs. If you are in sports marketing, then by all means, list that you kayak. If you were an Olympic athlete, put it down because it shows focus and achievement. If you are a mediocre hobbyist, leave it off. Personal interests that don't make you stand out as an achiever do not help you. And personal interests that are weird make you look weird and you don't know if your interviewer likes weird or not, so leave weird off the resume.
Don't be a designer unless you are. If you have more than three fonts on your resume and you're not a designer, you've botched the layout. If design was easy, no one would get paid for it. Recognize your strengths and keep design elements to the bare minimum. And leave Photoshop out of it: Just because you know how to use the shading tools doesn't mean you know how to use them well. Stay away from overused templates (like those in Microsoft Word) because you won't stand out, and it makes you look completely generic.[5]

Tips

Tailor your resume to each position. One-size-fits-all resumes should be avoided, unless you're casting a very wide net (versus applying for a specific company or position).
If you are only putting achievements on your resume, you are going to be hard-pressed to fill a whole page. That's okay. Anything on your resume that is not an achievement is wasting space, anyway, because you don't know what a hiring manager will look at first—and if you have ten good achievements and three mediocre lines about your life story, the hiring manager may only read those three lines—so remove them.
It's very hard to see your achievements from the trenches; you might think you did not have achievements because your boss doesn't ask you to do achievements, your boss asks you to do tasks and projects. But you need to recognize that you do not see achievements and ask for help to see them. A resume coach, or even a friend, can help you to see them more clearly.
List items in order of importance or relevance to the reader. Many people write the dates first, and while dates are important, they're not the most important.[6]
- Job history: Title/position, name of employer, city/state of employer, dates of employment.
  - If the company you work for is unknown, or the nature of the company isn't obvious from the name, describe the business, note its revenues and maybe how old it is; otherwise, a recruiter or hiring manager will have to look up the company description, which takes up more of their time.[7]
- Education: Name of degree (spelled out: Bachelor of _____) in name of major, name of university, city/state of university, graduation year, followed by peripheral information, such as minor and GPA.
Accompany your resume with a short and succinct cover letter/email. It should simply state that you're interested in the posistion for which you are applying, and that you look forward to hearing from the potential employer. Don't use the words, "As you can see from my resume..." and follow them with your entire work history and list of skills. It's guaranteed to move your entire resume to the deleted items folder.

Warnings

List your most recent job first. Chronological order is only a good idea if you are looking to get hired to go back in time. Otherwise you look like you're bucking resume writing convention in order to hide something, which you probably are, but you have to do it with a better sleight of hand than that.
